The surface characteristics of many modern materials make them vulnerable to rapid deterioration when exposed to atmospheric contaminants and grime. The deterioration may take the form of unsightly staining, surface dirt or in more severe cases the actual corrosion of the substrate itself.

The traditional remedy for such attack is either to coat with paints or waxes, which rely upon mechanical adhesion and soon disappear, or to continue with a tedious regime of frequent scrubbing and polishing.
